How to Save $500 for an Emergency

How to Save on a Low Income

I don’t know about you but my idea of downtime is making money. As someone who grew up poor, admiring the wealth of others, nothing excites me more than making money.

I personally love utilizing apps for this because it takes very little time.

If you’re not in a rush, and willing to grow your emergency fund slowly with $10-20 a week (that’s $560 minimum per year!)- then this post is for you.

If you’re in a rush or strapped for cash I would recommend more profitable side hustles, as mentioned in my posts here.

Cash Back and Points

This by far is the easiest option to save a little extra cash. There’s nothing quite like making money for doing what you already do. (Yay)

Pogo

I love pogo. I love this app because it combines many of the other categories in the blog post inside the app!

With Pogo, you can get a small signup bonus, and points for all your purchases just by linking your debit and credit cards! You can also receive points for receipts (my fave way of earning for maximum points), just by snapping a picture.

Pogo, also offers surveys in app, as well as other money saving recommendations on how to lower your car insurance and, keeping track of fees you may have overspent on, and an array of side hustle options.

The minimum withdrawal is 5.00 which can easily be achieved.

Rakuten

I think by now we’ve all heard of Rakuten. If you haven’t you certainly missing out. Rakuten is a platform that allows you to search the web for discounts on deals, but also allows for cash back on purchases! Cha-ching. Don’t you love making money doing thing you have to do anyway!

Rakuten is my go to app, for earning cash back. And will forever be a part of my money saving arsenal.

Shopping

If I’m already at the store I like to use Field agent, or Instacart.

Field Agent

Filed agent, is like being a secret shopper. They send you on little bounties for quick cash usually no less than $5.00.

How it works.

For example, they need you to find a Zebra Pen with purple ink. You will go the the store and locate the item. You have to be sure the UPC is an exact match then the app will prompt you to take pictures and answer a few questions.

That’s it!

I love it for its convenience, and quick payouts. My only dislike it using it at large store, it can sometimes feel like looking for a needle in a hay stack.

But if you love a good hunt, then I definitely recommend it. If you like these types of jobs I also recommend you check out similar apps like Observa, or Mobee.

Instacart

You alrady have to buy food, why not make a little cash doing it for someone else.

I love this Instacart because it doesn’t feel like I’m going out of the way to do it. Just dropping off groceries to a “friend”. Ha!

This is a great way to make a little extra cash if you don’t mind staying in the grocery aisles a tad bit longer than usual. You can check it out here.

Surveys

Survey apps. Theses are my least favorite, because of the time that can be wasted on qualifying for survey but I love them for the signup bonuses (which is much more worth the time and effort if you ask me.

My favorite survey company is one you probably haven’t heard of.

Google Rewards. That’s right! Google has it own survey program.

The best part if you get paid whether you qualify or not (though less, but still more than what other companies offer.) Surveys takes less that 1 minute to complete, and the payout at a minimum of $2.00 directly to your PayPal account.

The biggest con is that they don’t have surveys as often, but I would still argue its worth the effort. You can check it out here.

If your serious about your financial journey and would love additional resources to make sure your can manage this new found money, be sure to check out my blog post on How Many Bank Accounts You Should Have. They are many other ways that you can make money from your phone, but for now we’ll keep this post short and sweet. Be on the look out for the next post for an even deeper dive on how to make money from home.

Until next time.

XOXO, Fina.
